LUBBOCK, Texas -

The South Plains Council of Boys Scouts is inviting girls to join.

Starting this year, families can choose to sign up their sons and daughters for Cub Scouts. It's part of its "Rocket into Scouting" membership drive.

"Our hope is that we can reach more young people than we have in the past and deliver a fun, safe, family-oriented program called cubscouting, and we want as many boys and girls to get involved in our program as possible," Nathan Baie, Scout Executive, said.

Existing packs will have the option to establish a new girls pack, establish a pack that includes boys and girls den or simply remain all boys.

Scout leaders say this will help keep the integrity of the single gender model while being more inclusive of families needs.
